The Hercule Florence Institute (IHF) was founded in São Paulo in 2006 and was certified as a Civil Society Organization of Public Interest (OSCIP) in 2009. Among its goals are the collection, organization, conservation and dissemination of bibliography and documents about nineteenth-century Brazil. The center of its interests consists in the study of several nineteenth-century travelers and their accounts, as well as in the scientific and cultural production of the Langsdorff Expedition (1825-1828) and the life and work of Hercule Florence (1804-1879).
In addition to its own collection, library and archives, the IHF carries out projects in conjunction with museums and research institutions, such as the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris (BNF), Museu Paulista at the University of São Paulo, Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita e José Mindlin, Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro, Centro de Memória da Unicamp (CMU), Escola Politécnica de São Paulo (University of São Paulo), among others.
Written between 1837 and 1859 as an illustrated compendium of Florence’s life and work, this is the first time that this manuscript is published in its entirety. It is his most important work –and one of the most important works in the world history of photography– which contains, in addition to an autobiography, the description of his inventions and the final –and the only complete– version of the Langsdorff Expedition (1825-1828).
This launch is the first editorial initiative of the IHF and it happens after the large exhibition that gathered Hercule Florence’s work and was held in Monaco in 2017.
As the guardian of the original documents, along 10 years, the Institute has promoted the restoration, high resolution digitization, diplomatic transcription of the original manuscript and produced the work presented here, made of 300 numbered copies.
300 copies numbered from 001 to 300; 15 copies reserved for the IHF, without numbering; 2 copies reserved for the Princes of Monaco.
