hercule florencelangsdorff expedition

This page consists of an interactive map based on the places visited and mentioned by Hercule Florence in his Voyage Fluvial du Tiété à l’Amazonie, which is part of the set of documents, L’ami des Arts livré à lui-même. This version, which was written over a period of twenty years, revisits the traveler and inventor’s role as a draftsman in the expedition that came to be known as the Langsdorff Expedition. This expedition was funded by the Russian Empire and was led by Baron Georg Heinrich von Langsdorff, a German doctor who had become a Russian citizen and served as the Russian consul in the Empire of Brazil.

The places Florence visited between 1825 and 1828 in the provinces of São Paulo, Matto-Grosso, and Grão-Pará, as mentioned in his account, were collected, as well as their respective locations.

Each map’s locations were reviewed to ensure the highest level of accuracy possible. Documents from before, during, and after the Voyage Fluvial, as well as traveler’s reports, maps, databases of cartographic information, institutional records, and testimonies from locals are some of the sources that supported this effort. Following the investigation, the destinations were georeferenced in a cartographic base using Google Earth software, and they are now available in an interactive format with photographs and quotes from the travelogue created by Hercule Florence.
