The IHF makes available the download of the e-book “Museu Paulista and the narratives’ memories of Aimé-Adrien-Taunay and Hercule Florence”, a partnership between the Institute Hercule Florence and the Museu Paulista of the University of São Paulo.

In partnership with the Museu Paulista of USP, the Institute Hercule Florence presents and makes available the e-book “Museu Paulista and the narratives’ memories of Aimé-Adrien Taunay and Hercule Florence”.

The digital book was organized by Prof. Dr. Ana Paula Nascimento, a collaborating researcher at the Museu Paulista of USP, and Prof. Dr. Maria Aparecida de Menezes Borrego, the supervisor of the Museu Republicano.

Conceived from the deepening of the contents of the lectures delivered during the international seminar of the same name, held in November 2019 at Teatro do Sesc Ipiranga [Sesc Ipiranga Theater], the book features fourteen articles written by twenty authors. These include Ana Paula Nascimento, Maria Aparecida de Menezes Borrego, Iara Lis Schiavinatto, Antonio Florence, Francis Melvin Lee, Jacques Leenhardt, João Carlos Cândido Silva Libardi Santos, among other invited contributors.

The publication is organized in two parts. The first one presents articles concerning Aimé-Adrien Taunay, such as an analysis of his biography, the addition of Adrien Taunay’s notebook to the Afonso Taunay Collection of the Museu Paulista of USP, and the reconstitution of the route taken by the painter as described in the manuscript under study, among other topics. The second section features works inspired by Hercule Florence in the collection of the Museu Paulista, particularly those commissioned in the 1920s and 1940s. The question of Florence’s concerns about the reproduction and representation of the real is another theme addressed.

In the article “The old and new partnerships involving the Florence and Taunay families”, Antonio Florence, the president of the IHF board, gives a personal account of the family relations between the Taunays and the Florences, and highlights the main goals of the institute: the research and dissemination of textual and iconographic documents regarding travelers and travel narratives published during the nineteenth century, especially those by Hercule Florence.

About the partnership between the IHF and the Museu Paulista of the University of São Paulo.

The partnership between the Institute Hercule Florence and the Museu Paulista of the University of São Paulo began in 2011, with the digitalization, restoration, transcription and translation of the manuscript Amado Adriano Taunay’s Notebook, which belongs to the MP/USP collection. In 2015, with the support of the USP Institute of Physics, the research could be enhanced by the possibility for reading the handwriting in pencil that was concealed under the manuscript’s ferrogallic ink, uncovering a new layer of records on the History of nineteenth-century Brazil.

Throughout 2019 and 2020, the partnership continued with the project “Hercule Florence: the Patriarch of Paulista Iconography”, by way of research coordinated by Ana Paula Nascimento (Professor Dr. Research Collaborator at MP/USP), with supervision of Maria Aparecida de Menezes Borrego (Professor Dr. of MP/USP and technical-scientific supervisor of the Museu Republicano de Itu - USP) and Francis Melvin Lee (Director of the IHF).

These studies led to the “International Seminar Museu Paulista and the narratives’ memories of Aimé-Adrien Taunay and Hercule Florence,” which took place in November 2019, and discussed the enlargement of knowledge concerning Florence and his works as a starting point for the paintings' commissions for the Museu Paulista.

In February 2021, there was also the Hercule Florence webinar, the production of images, and the exhibitions at the Museu do Ipiranga and the Museu Republicano, which are available on the IHF’s YouTube channel.
